Atlantic Royal is the largest, fully vertically-integrated mussel farming and processing company in South Africa, with the full value chain managed internally – from sea to market.

With world-class farming, harvesting, processing, packaging and freezing equipment, and the ability to process and freeze raw materials within two hours from harvest, we ensure the highest quality mussels for the market.

Our Products

All of our mussels are fully sustainable, sand-free, and grown in the cool pure waters off the West Coast of South Africa. All our products are produced using top quality natural ingredients and contain no artificial additives or preservatives whatsoever.

Producing whole shell mussels, half shell mussels, and mussel meat, our mussels are individually quick frozen (IQF) and vacuum-packed for both the retail and food service or wholesale markets.

Food Safety & Product Quality

Our mussels are harvested in a clean and pure environment at a state-of-the-art facility. Our process is supported by world-leading food safety programmes, including the British Retail Council (BRC) currently in implementation phase, the National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS) and the Department of Agriculture, Forestry, Fishing (DAFF). Our Quality Assurance team is fully qualified in HACCP, HARCP (Hazard Analysis and Risk-Based Preventive Controls), BRC implementation and internal audit processes.

The advantageous location of the factory and speed of the process, together with continuous inspections and strict adherence to food safety and quality assurance programmes, guarantee the best quality mussels.

Sustainable Farming & Harvesting

Mirroring the most successful farming and harvesting methodologies and systems implemented worldwide, we have opted for the longline farming system. Our cost-effective farming and harvesting methods contribute to our low carbon footprint and provides superior quality mussels.

Sustainability is at the core of our business, and we believe that it’s our responsibility to continuously examine our interactions with the environment to ensure negative effects are minimised. We subscribe fully to the Marine and Coastal Management regulations stipulated by the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing, and the Department of Environmental Affairs in promoting responsible and sustainable farming practices.

Social Responsibility

We recognise the importance of transformation within the macro socio-economic space where we are active, to ensure the long-term sustainability of South Africa. We are motivated to take the lead in our industry and work towards empowering our workforce and the broader Saldanha community.

Partnering with local and national government, we aim to grow the aquaculture industry and implement more inclusive participation within the sector. This unique partnership forms part of our strategic objectives towards the planning, setting-up, developing and mentoring of small-scale mussel farmers by providing know-how, management, infrastructure, market access and training. The aim is to transform them into 100% black-empowered, fully commercial farms through effective mentorship programmes.
